Your Behavioural Optometrist Gary Rodney

Who Is Gary Rodney?

Gary has been practicing optometry for 16 years. After graduating from university, he started with a practice of experienced older optometrists to learn from. And he learnt well; often amazing his older colleagues with his insightful judgements.

Frustration Soon Set In

“You’ve done all you can do!” was the common response after seeing children that had no eye problem but still struggled to read or had eyestrain symptoms. He knew something wasn’t right and there had to be more to it.

The desperation parents faced soon led Gary on a journey. He had heard of an Optometrist nearby that called himself a Behavioural / Developmental Optometrist and seemed to specialise in children. Gary had heard good reports about this “special Optometrist” so Gary would refer patients to him when all else failed.

Gary Discovers a Breakthrough

He didn’t hear from his patients for about 6 weeks and wondered what happened to them. Then they came running into his practice with big happy smiles. The kids were wearing bifocals which to traditional optics were unheard of in a child. Their mothers were raving about how wonderful it is and thanking Gary profusely for finding this guy.

Apparently there were no more symptoms after six weeks of treatment – bifocals and some funny exercises. In fact, the children’s improvement was rapid. Learning became easy now they could concentrate on what they were learning and they were on there way to becoming age appropriate readers.

Now whilst Gary was happy for them, he was also frustrated and embarrassed that he couldn’t get the same results … couldn’t get the results he was desperate to achieve. So he visited this optometrist the next day and spent four hours with him in his practice. Gary soon learnt there was more to it than what he had been taught with a conventional model of the eyes.

This Optometrist pointed out where Gary could find all the right textbooks and research papers and courses that he never knew existed.

The Beginning of Understanding

Determined to help parents cure their children of vision related problems, Gary then went on to complete the Behavioural Optometry component in the post graduate Masters unit with a High Distinction. He is often asked to lecture and educate parents and teachers about vision and its impact on learning and performance. He now constantly gets letters of thanks from parents and children on how much easier their life is since they improved their vision skills and he is an in demand public speaker with regular speaking gigs in Sydney and Gosford.

As Gary puts it…

“It’s my passion to help anyone who is motivated to achieve more and function at a higher level no matter what stage of life they are at.”

And Gary’s many patients thank him for this passion.
